What Are Your Eco-Sins?
Submitted by Tracey_Smith on Wed, 2008-02-06 15:48.
It's Wednesday, my favourite day of the week - radio day.
I had lots of tongue in cheeky fun today with a phone-in about our worst eco-sins!
Listeners were invited to call me, anonymously of course, with their most awful eco-sin and at one point, it turned into a confession booth on the airwaves!
There were things like....
"Occasionally, I'll go for a McDonalds and when I'm feeling desperate, a KFC!"
and
"Sometimes, I don't want to share the bath water with my other half....I just want a pocket of self-indulgent time, with candles on and a glass of chilled wine and I want to lay there until the water goes cold and I go wrinkly...."
there was also a
"I just cannot seem to organise myself well enough to do car share and always go shopping with 3 empty seats..."
Many of the listeners commented how 'absolved' they felt after shedding the burden of their wrongdoings....lol...
So I thought I'd open it up to you, my lovely readers.
The deal is this, you hop onto the Comment button at the bottom of the page and tell me everything, I'll print it, you'll feel better and it might even nudge you closer to not doing it again! Everyone wins!
The most important thing to remember is this, we are all human and we all make mistakes. The purists of the world are awful and don't help us on our migration to a better life...they fill us with guilt and anguish, not optimism and hope that we might get it right next time....
So come on, 'fess up to your Sister of Salvation, Tracey Smith....I'm sitting in the booth awaiting your note...
Ahhhhhhmennnnnn.

Bags for Life
I often under-estimate my shopping and spend a fortune on extra bags for life, only to leave them at home the next time I go out. Almost Mrs Average (Suffolk)xxx
Garden Gone
We just paved over the front garden so we can park our cars! And there's no going back on this one either as there's no street parking available for our 2 cars.

Increases in the number of cars we drive and urban sprawl are just two of the reasons you may have come to this decision.
There's not a one-stop answer to this problem and everybody has to look inward for a personal solution.
Selling the car and using a car-share scheme like the one at Zipcar could save you a fortune and I know public transport can sometimes leave a lot to be desired, but if you embrace a bit of tolerance, you might be able to work with that too occasionally!
However, as the slab-job has already been done, could you consider finding a place on the drive to plant tall trees or shrubs in tubs to decorate the area?
Anything you can do 'does' help, keep the drive semi-green!

Plastic bottles
I never recycle my milk containers. I know i should and I do do everything else but the recycling men don't collect them and I don't know where the nearest bottle bank is.

Thanks for your note and this reflects a common thought on the issue of recycling our plastic - it isn't made easy by not having doorstep collections, but the authorities are making moves towards providing us with better and more permanent solutions - unfortunately, every local authority is different, but I am sure, one day, there will be a universal directive.
However, in the meantime, it's great that you do everything else and if you check out the following link and tap in your post code, you'll find details of nearby plastic (and other) recycling stations.
Don't make a special journey to take a bag there, instead, tie up a quick visit when you are passing by.
All the best with ramping up your challenge!
